If you should receive an email message which displays a list of email addresses in the "Cc:" field, please consider a "blind" reply, using the boilerplate text which we have supplied below, to all senders of such messages. Eudora Pro is an example of modern email software which supports "blind" copies -- all recipients see a message like this, on their "To:" line: To: (Recipient list suppressed) We reply to the senders with the "blind" copy option, as well, so that these senders can see exactly how it works. Of course, they may not have software with this capability. We want to encourage them to upgrade, or switch, to software which does support transmission of such "blind" copies, like Eudora Pro, available at URL: http://www.qualcomm.com The exact sequence which we use is as follows: 1. identify a message with private addresses in the "Cc:" field; 2. use the "Forward" function, to reply; 3. cut and paste the sender's email address into the "Bcc:" (blind copy) field; 4. merge the boilerplate text below, at the start of your reply message; 5. leave the offending "Cc:" line in your reply, but cut away all other extraneous text; 6. send this forwarded message back to the sender, preferably with the "low priority" flag set ON; 7. optionally, add your own email address in the Bcc: field, to "echo back" your message. There is no copyright on the boilerplate text which follows below. We would only ask that, if you should make any changes, that you assume all responsiblity for those changes. This means supporting people -- by answering any questions they may have, as a service to the entire Internet community. Thanks very much for helping improve electronic privacy on the Internet. /s/ Paul Mitchell Counselor at Law http://supremelaw.com [begin boilerplate: please cut and paste] Dear Friend, With this message, we are launching a voluntary program to improve privacy on the Internet, and reduce the quantity of unwanted email which we all receive. We are staunch advocates of self-government -- the best form of government! We have decided to focus this effort on the frequent use of email lists which are visible to the recipient. In Eudora Pro, this is done by pasting a list of email addresses into the "Cc:" field of a message. See example(s) below. Eudora Pro, like other modern email programs, also has a blind copy feature, which is found in the "Bcc:" field instead. This feature has the result of suppressing the entire list, instead of displaying it to the recipient. We used this feature to send this message to you. Our voluntary effort now is to encourage people like yourself to switch to blind copies, if and when you decide to broadcast any message to a list of recipients. As part of this program, we are also recommending that list server software be modified, so that the sender's email address is NOT displayed in messages which are distributed to everyone on any given email list. This feature of list servers would be the "default," which could be changed by the user, but ONLY by the user. If you have received what you might regard as "unwanted" email from us recently, it is most likely because your email address (and name) were sent to us in a "Cc:" field. Please consider switching to blind copies, and pass this message along to your contacts who are adding your email address to their "Cc:" fields as well. Thanks very much! /s/ Paul Mitchell Counselor at Law http://supremelaw.com p.s. Privacy is a fundamental Right. See the Privacy Act for authority.
