Top lawmakers announced Monday they were launching an investigation
into charges that the Internal Revenue Service had carried out
politically motivated audits of conservative, tax-exempt
organizations. House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committee
members asked staff to look into reports the IRS had singled out the
Heritage Foundation, National Rifle Association, and other
right-leaning groups. IRS Commissioner Margaret Milner Richardson
