There is a legal term called "Promissory Estoppel" which covers your husband's situation. I myself am in a similar situation in that my company moved me half way across the country and promised me lots of money etc. After being her 4 months, they terminated me because they no longer want to have the division that they made me the National manager over. Your case seems to be very similar. A written contract is not required.
