I usually spell out an entire phrase, before
using any abbreviations. The proper way is this:
Supreme Court of the United States
In subsequent abbreviations, it is okay
to omit the term "hereinafter".
In this way, the writer cannot be faulted
for failing to define pivotal terms.
If you are in a hurry, the bibliographic
convention for the U.S. Supreme Court is "S.Ct."
State Supreme Courts can be identified
as "Kansas Supreme Court" and so on.
