Missile guidance locks onto jet.
Missile leaves obvious contrail.
Missile hits jet.
Jet explodes.
Jet falls into sea.
Missile falls into sea too.
Here is the CIA version:
Jet gains altitude.
Jet leaves thin contrail.
Jet blows up spontaneously.
Jet leaves thick contrail now.
People on ground see thin contrail,
because they are partying on porch,
and are blinded by moonlight (& music).
Jet then falls into sea.
No missile anywhere, see?
Everybody go home now.
Party's over.
