TDM or George Gilder? > My memory, from having worked on the Landsat satellite system, is that there are a large number of "multiplexing" algorithms. For example, I know the designer of the original Telebit Trailblazer, which uses a frequency division scheme, and it is still the best overall modem for communicating with less developed countries, where phone networks are poor quality, at best. The modem continuously samples the transmission quality in 12-15 "bands," and adjusts dynamically to changes in the fidelity of any given band. Sadly, this approach did not become the dominant technology in America. /s/ Paul Mitchell At 09:41 PM 2/16/97 -0600, you wrote: >>>This is a quote from George Gilder in the magazine ASAP, 2/24/97, p. 32: >>> >>>"In a world where several companies have demonstrated terabit-per-second >>>transmissions in a single fiber thread, you get an entire worldwide >>>commumnications net that carries a rough total of just one terabit per >>>second." >>> >>>He does not go on and tell us why we are using fiber so inefficiently. >>>George Gilder is a world famous guru; he is going to be speaking in Kansas >>>City one of these days.
